Top 100 Homeless Songs
Song #51
Neil Young
|
Young's guitar work, deeply personal lyrics and signature tenor singing voice define his long career. Young also plays piano and harmonica on many albums, which frequently combine folk, rock, country and other musical styles. His often distorted electric guitar playing, especially with Crazy Horse, earned him the nickname "Godfather of Grunge.
Neil Young has received several Grammy Awards. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him twice: as a solo artist in 1995 and in 1997 as a member of Buffalo Springfield. In 2000, Rolling Stone named Young the 34th greatest rock 'n roll artist.
"Safeway Cart" is a song written by Young for his 20th studio album released in 1994 and titled Sleeps With Angels, it was his 7th album recorded with Crazy Horse. The song paints a picture of a "ghetto dawn" that's moody and unnerving. Nothing seems to be happening, but the ominous stillness of the song could almost be the setting for a post-apocalyptic landscape or maybe it's simply about a rundown part of town populated by the poor, homeless and forgotten.
"Safeway Cart" is the second entry by Neil Young to the Homeless Persons Memorial Day Top 100 list. The other song on the Top 100 is "Keep On Rockin' In The Free World."

"Safeway Cart"
Lyrics
Like a Safeway cart rolling down the street
Like a sandal mark on the Savior's feet
Just keep rolling on it's a ghetto dawn
Baby looks so bad with her TV eyes
Going, going, gone and the picture cries
It's a ghetto dawn
Baby looks so bad with her TV eyes
Going, going, gone and the picture cries
Baby looks so bad with her TV eyes
Like a Safeway cart rolling down the street
Past the Handy mart to the Savior's feet
Going, going, gone and the picture cries
Baby looks so sad
Baby looks so bad
It's a ghetto dawn
Like a Safeway cart rolling down the street
Like a sandal mark on the Savior's feet
Just keep rolling on to a ghetto dawn
