Song #25
Craig Murray and the Loose Connections
|
The song “Honest Broken Man” was written during a tough time in Ireland for many a people. As a nation the 2008 recession had a big effect on the Irish people. Many families who held jobs and homes almost overnight found themselves living out on the street. People have a very negative view of many homeless people and this song was to get the point across that not all homeless are in that position by any wrong doing of their own. That homeless people come from all walks of lives and are not there by choice.
Craig’s song “Honest Broken Man” comes from an encounter with a homeless man who was sleeping out on the streets of Dublin when many walking past ignored him and stuck their noses up as they went about with their day. Craig sat with the man and chatted to him about his life and it was then he learned that this man had a job, a family and a home not long before the crash of 2008 and was now on the street as he had lost his job he had spent most of his savings and when he told his wife she kicked him out of their home. He was not a bad person, a drug taker or anything of the kind but instead an honest man that was broken by the recession.
People walking by didn’t give him the time of day and did not know his actual situation or what had him on the street’s. This song was written to shed light that we should not always judge a book by its cover, that a simple look in the eyes of someone on the streets can make their day.
According to songwriter Craig Murray, the homeless man's explanation that he is an "honest broken man" is one that struck accord and made him realize that everyone has a story and a reason.

"Honest Broken Man"
Lyrics
Well I saw him there
at the side of the road
on a cardboard box could barely carry his load
and the people walking by don't even see him there
don't even see his stare
They don't care to ask his name
think he's another drug addict with himself to blame
but he's an honest broken man
yeah, he's an honest broken man
well he's an honest broken man doing all that he can
And is it cold out tonight ?
is it cold out tonight ?
have you got somewhere to stay and will you be alright ?
He wears a t-shirt and a pair of shorts
ripped to the brim
and although he’s getting thin
they can barely hold him in
His wife she kicked him out
for opening his stupid mouth
it was one small mistake
and now hes left out all day
he's an honest broken man
yeah he's an honest broken man
well he's an honest broken man doing all that he can
And is it cold out tonight?
is it cold out tonight ?
have you got somewhere to stay and will you be alright ?
Well he's walking down the road
and no one cares just where he goes
he's shaking in the cold
but still no one will hold his umbrella
he's an honest broken man
yeah he's an honest broken man
well he's an honest broken man doing all that he can
And is it cold out tonight ?
is it cold out tonight ?
have you got somewhere to stay and will you be alright ?
Yeah, is it cold out tonight ?
is it cold out tonight ?
have you got somewhere to stay and will you be alright ?
